Originally built in 14th century,  Compton Castle is a fortified manor house. It was the home of the Gilbert family, note particularly Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539 to 1583) who was a half brother to Sir Walter Raleigh. The house is now occupied and managed by members of the Gilbert family for the National Trust. A bit of a fairy tale castle, with great hall, battlements, towers, stone courtyard, minstrel's gallery
